RANSOM- Doris Martha (Sulzberger) Sokay passed away at 6:20 AM 10 January, 2015 at the age of 95. She was born 26 May, 1919 in Ransom IL, the youngest of eight children of Martha Ann (Kates) and Harry Michael Sulzberger.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday at Allen Township Cemetery, Ransom with Father Anthony Ego, officiating. Full military rites will be provided by members of Streator American Legion Post # 217 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 1492. Hagi Funeral Home, Streator is in charge of arrangements.
Doris attended Ransom public grade school and three years at the Ransom High School. The fourth year she graduate from Streator High School.
In 1937 Doris entered nurses training at South Shore Hospital in Chicago IL which was affiliated with Cook County Hospital. Following her graduation in 1940, she remained there in pediatric and obstetric nursing. In June 1942 she volunteered in the United States Army Nurse Corp.
She married Major Leslie Sokay on 22 January, 1947 at St. Patrick’s Church, Ransom, on her parent’s 45th wedding anniversary. He preceded her in death 6 March, 2010.
Her active duty assignments included: Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio; Hickam Field, Hawaii; Japan; Orly Field, France; Wiesbaden, Germany and Andrews AFB, MD. Doris retired 26 May, 1979 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel ASAF
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers and two sisters. She leaves many nephews and their wives with whom she shared her love. Their many kindnesses and generosities have shown through her later years.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
