Irene M. Berg, 90, of Streator passed away at 11:37 PM Thursday (February 28, 2019) at O.S.F. St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa.
A visitation will be held from 4-6 PM Sunday at the Hagi & Baker Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 AM Monday at St. Michael the Archangel Church. Monsignor Philip Halfacre will officiate.
Interment will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Streator. Pallbearers will be Keith Klein, Zachary Thomson, Earl Barnickel, Josh Appel, Nick Delheimer, Tony Ferraro, and John Thomson.
She was born on November 17, 1928 in Peru, IL to Louis & Josephine (Stremlau) Gapski. She married Richard C. Berg Sr. on November 30, 1946 at St. Valentine’s Church in Peru. He preceded her in death on May 20, 1990.
She is survived by daughters: Kathleen Wiechman of Streator and Karen (Chuck) Delheimer of Noblesville, IN and a son: Richard (Lucy) Berg Jr of Metamora; 8 grandchildren: Paul Weichman, Angela Thomson, Crystal Lafferty, Josh Appel, Aleesha Ferraro, Drew Berg and Nick and Megan Delheimer; 9 great grandchildren; sisters: Veronica Machi of California, Lillian (Charles) Galetti of Seatonville and Henriettta (Eugene) Klein of Mendota; a brother Chester Gapski of Oglesby and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; sisters: Eleanor Henry, Clara Kostello, Vivian Daniels and Mary Liebhart and brothers Bill and Louis Gapski and a brother in infancy.
She had attended St. Joseph Commercial School in Peru.
She was a former member of St. Anthony of Padua Church and its Altar & Rosary Society, the Post Office Auxiliary and Boots and Ruffles. She is now a member of St. Michael the Archangel Church. She loved playing scrabble, watching Wheel of Fortune and always sang “Happy Birthday” to all of her family. Her family meant everything to her and she especially enjoyed the holiday’s with them.
She loved the Wizard of Oz and was a diehard Cubs fan.
Memorial may be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
