Mario Cerda Lopez, 63 of Streator passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at his residence surrounded by his family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 12:30 PM Saturday, July 13, 2024 at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Streator, with Monsignor Philip Halfacre officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Streator. Pallbearers will be Andrew Lopez, Cipriano Lopez, Keegan Gray, Austin Lopez, Jarett McReynolds and Noah Lopez.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Friday at Hagi & Schultz Funeral Home with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM.
Mario was born September 5, 1960 in Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico, a son of David V. Lopez and Maria Lopez Cerda.
He is survived by a daughter, Sofia (Christopher Akin) Lopez, 4 sons, Noel Lopez and Steven (Nate Nugent) Lopez, of Streator, Andrew (Emily) Lopez of Ottawa, and Cipriano (Vanessa Kennedy) Lopez of Streator; 13 grandchildren, Kayleigh, Natalie and Keegan Gray, Connor Akin, Cyra Tupayachi, Noah, Zola, and Giovanni Lopez, Ellie, Evelyn, Exander, Roman and Leo; and 2 great grandchildren, Brooks and Royce. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, J. Guadalupe (Christina) Lopez, Jesus (Delia) Lopez, and Juan Lopez, all of Streator, Maria (Leroy) Long of Oswego, and Soledad (Brian) Holofchak, Elena (Nick) LeBeau, and Jose Lopez all of Streator; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Manuel Lopez and David Lopez.
Mario was a member of the former St. Mary’s Church and current member of St. Michael the Archangel Parish.
He had worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and then the BNSF Railroad.
Mario loved sports and enjoyed watching Boxing. He had been a coach for Streator Youth Soccer.
Mario was a member of the Marshall County Sportsman’s Club and a member of the YMCA. One of his favorite pastimes was fishing. His family will fondly remember Mario and him rolling his eyes.
